4th/5th Grade artists have been learning about Native American cultures in Social Studies class. In art, they learned how to create pottery using clay using techniques used by many Native American cultures. They have learned about the process of ceramics creation and will soon fire their clay work in the kiln.
ceramics: pottery or clay sculpture fired at high temperatures in a kiln or oven to make it harder and stronger.
kiln - A special oven or furnace that can reach very high temperatures and is used to bake or 'fire' clay
coil pot: Coils are long, snake-like ropes of clay that are used in making pottery. The coil method of making pottery involves building the walls of a pot with a series of coils into the required shape.
Here are some of our coil pots that are drying. As soon as they are completely dry, we will put them into the kiln to be fired.
