First grade artists practiced painting, cutting, and gluing skills to create snowmen paintings. Second and third graders learned how to make their snowmen go "off the page" to create an interesting composition.
At the beginning of the year, all students created sketchbooks to keep art class notes and sketches organized. Sketchbooks are also a place to practice drawing skills if students complete a project early. The first element of art that we learned about this year was LINE. NTA artists of all ages learned about many types of line and how this simple element can create amazing designs. Check out some of the drawings of our primary and intermediate students' sketchbooks.
Art students in 2nd and 3rd grade explored the element of art called texture. They learned that texture is the way that something feels and that as artists we can show texture by creating rubbings with the side of a crayon. Students then used the wax-resist method of painting to add color around the rubbings without covering the crayon with watercolor paint.
2nd and 3rd grade students learned how to use shapes to draw people and things. Students learned how to draw a horizon line to create a ground to place objects on. Students used shapes and lines to create bare Autumn trees in a Fall scene. Finally, they added red and yellow paint to show leaves on these trees.
Primary students studied the artist, Wassily Kandinsky. Wassily was an artist who painted abstract artwork to music. We learned about the different types of lines and explored how various lines express emotions. Students then painted their own lines while listening to music. Finally, they learned added blue, red, and yellow paint to their work to experiment with color mixing.
